Around 400: The Sabaean king of Yemen visits Yathrib in Arabia, and converts to Judaism. He makes it the state religion of Yemen. 7th century: Conversion into Islam, the region joins the Caliphate. Sanaa sometimes spelled Sanaa or Sana'a) is the capital of Yemen and the centre of San'a' Governorate. San'a' is located at 15.354722° N 44.20667° E and has a population of 1,747,627 (2004 census). San'a' lies in the heart of Yemeni highlands on a plateau at an altitude of 2200m surrounded by several mountains, notably Jabal Nuqum and Aiban. The city is around 320 km north of Aden. San'a' is one of the ancient Yemeni cities dating back to the Sabaean dynasty of the 6th Century BC. The oldest written reference to its existence is found in inscriptions which date back to the 1st Century AD. It is suggested that San'a' was the capital of the Himyarite kingdom at the onset of the 6th Century AD. When King Yousef Athar (or Dhu Nuwas), the last of the Himyarite kings, was in power, San'a' was also the capital of the Ethiopian viceroys, then after 570 of the Persians. As of the dawn of Islam until the detachment of independent sub-states in many parts of Yemen Islamic Caliphate, San'a' persisted as the governing seat, who himself is Caliph's deputy in running the affairs of one of Yemen's Three Makhalifs: Mikhlaf San'a', Mikhlaf al-Janad and Mikhlaf Hadhramawt. The city of San'a' recurrently assumed an important status and all Yemenite States competed to control it. The Mamelukes arrived in Yemen in AD 1517. Following the collapse of the Mamelukes in Egypt at the hands of the Ottoman Turks, Yemen fell under the Ottoman Rule and during the first Ottoman rule of Yemen between 1538-1635, San'a' became the capital of the Ottoman Vilayet and also during the Ottoman second rule 1872-1918. In 1918, San'a' was the capital of Imam Yahya, who ruled North Yemen. At the onset of the 1962 revolution which deposed the imamate rule, it became the capital of the Arab Republic of Yemen. It was then the capital of unified Yemen in 1990 where it is dubbed as the historical capital of Yemen. The old, fortified city has been inhabited for more than 2500 years and contains a wealth of intact architectural gems. It was declared a World Heritage City by the United Nations in 1984. Efforts are underway to preserve some of the oldest buildings, some of which are over 400 years old. Surrounded by ancient clay walls which stand six to nine metres (20-30ft) high, the old city boasts over 100 mosques, 12 hammams (baths) and 6500 houses. Many of the houses look rather like ancient skyscrapers -- reaching several storeys high and topped with flat roofs, they are decorated with elaborate friezes and intricately carved windows. One of the most popular attractions is Suq al-Milh (Salt Market), where it is possible to buy not only salt but also bread, spices, raisins, cotton, copper, pottery, silverware, antiques, and a host of other goods. The majestic seventh century al-Jami'a l-Kabir (The Great Mosque) is one of the oldest in the Muslim world. Bāb al-Yaman "Yemen Gate" is an iconized entry point through the city walls and is over 700 years old. LEADIN: Yemen's 2014 has been marked by violence and economic uncertainty. Power struggles have continued, with Houthi Shiite rebels sweeping from their northern stronghold and capturing the capital Sanaa. STORYLINE: Yemen is a country in turmoil. It's still struggling with political reform and al-Qaida violence. And there's an ongoing power struggle between President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi and Shiite rebels, known as Houthis. Ahmed Al-Zarqa, a political analyst says: "2014 is considered the worst that the country has witnessed because the state has completely fallen during this year. Armed militias took control of many cities, the people's faith in their government has deteriorated. Political and economic issues have also deteriorated and also gaps arose between the different political camps." January 25th - the so-called National Dialogue talks draw to a close. The long-running negotiations have brought together rival groups and delegates from across Yemen to discuss a new political system for the country. Their priority is to draw up a new constitution in the wake of the country's 2011 uprising. It's also hoped the agreement will ease tensions between north and south. But some leaders - including the Houthi representative - have boycotted the talks. Hassan Zaid, Yemeni Minister of State, says: "I think that the most important event was the agreement, which I hope will continue and reach its final stage, which the Ansar Allah group and the Yemeni assembly for reform had signed. Also, I hope that the negative developments between the north and south would stop through a general national agreement." April - US air strikes kill nine suspected al-Qaida militants and three civilians. And Yemeni forces stage a two-day assault on the extremists in the south of the country. The government claims 55 militants are killed. The strikes in al-Bayda and surrounding provinces appear to be a significant escalation in the US and Yemeni campaign against al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula. July 7th and Yemen's president orders a raft of austerity measures to reduce pressure on the country's poor public finances. The impoverished state has forecast a budget deficit of around 679 billion rials (3.16 billion US dollars) this year. The belt-tightening measures include a recruitment freeze at all state institutions and curbs on foreign travel by government officials. With the government struggling to provide basic services amid an ongoing war against militants, fuel shortages have become the most visible sign of Yemen's plight. But the measures are not welcomed by the public. On July 30th anger erupts on the streets of the Yemeni capital Sanaa, after the government almost doubles fuel prices. The administration says the price hike is an attempt to reform subsidies and narrow a budget deficit. The country has spent nearly three billion US dollars this year so far on fuel subsidies, roughly 20 percent of state expenditure, according to a Finance Ministry statement carried by Yemen's official news agency SABA. But Yemenis say the price hike creates more economic suffering for ordinary people. The burning street barricades are part of scattered demonstrations against the government's decision. Troops quickly disperse the protesters, but not before a person is killed and several injured. And the unrest is not over. On September 9th police open fire on the protesters as they head towards the Prime Minister's office. As the demonstrators march up to the government headquarters, the police first fire tear gas to try to disperse the crowds, they then reportedly begin shooting. According to Human Rights Watch, at least seven are killed, including an ambulance driver. Violence in the capital continues for several more weeks. (15 May 2017) The United Nations and local officials have said that a cholera outbreak has infected nearly ten thousand people across Yemen and killed over a hundred in the past few weeks. Khaled Al-Montaser, the head of Sanaa's Health Office, said over 9,000 cases had been reported, with nearly 1,500 infected patients in the capital alone, stretching medical resources and causing overcrowding in wards across the city. Al-Montaser said that the country's Ministry of Health was working hard and had declared a "state of emergency". At Al Sabeen Hospital, children infected with the diarrhoea-causing disease were seen lying on mattresses on corridor floors while available beds slept multiple patients. Rajat Madhok, UNICEF's Chief of Communications and Advocacy in Yemen, told the Associated Press that there were around 8,500 suspected cases of diarrhoea, causing a "public health crisis" in the wartorn country. Madhok said that shortage of medical supplies had hit the country badly and an urgent response was needed despite ongoing support from UNICEF, the UN's children's agency. Jamie McGoldrick, the UN humanitarian coordinator in Yemen, on Monday urged donor countries to fulfil more than 1 billion US dollars in aid pledges made in Geneva last month. McGoldrick said the cholera outbreak has killed 115 people over the past two weeks. A Saudi-led coalition has been battling Shiite Houthi rebels in Yemen since March 2015, in a war that has killed more than 10,000 civilians. The World Health Organisation said last month that fewer than 45 percent of health facilities in Yemen are now fully functioning, and that the flow of "essential medicines" has fallen by nearly 70 percent. According to the WHO, cholera needs immediate medical care and sanitation measures including clean potable water along with oral vaccination to prevent the spread of the disease.
